About
the Conceptual Approach
A conceptual approach to learning chemistry is a traditional approach,
but with a re-emphasis on the understanding of concepts. One of
the main goals is to help students visualize the behavior of atoms
and molecules and to show how this behavior gives rise to our macroscopic
environment. The ability of water to absorb large quantities of
heat, for example, is traced to the hydrogen bonds occurring among
water molecules. Chemistry-related societal issues, such as global
warming, are also highlighted to show the significance of the concepts
being explored.
Conceptual Chemistry embraces this approach at a level suitable
for college students needing a gentle but sound introduction to
a physical science. It aims for a clear and inviting presentation
of chemistry concepts so that instructors are empowered to do what
they do best, which is to work one-on-one with students to help
them learn chemistry and to help them appreciate the impact chemistry
has had and will continue to have on the way we live.
